How to get your parents' friend to be more talkative?

My parents' friend is my teacher for this activity I have recently taken up. He taught my mom for this activity and now he is teaching me. My mom always says how he tells stories, jokes, etc. but he never tells stories or jokes around with me. My mom said it was a couple months after she started this activity before they really started talking and he started telling jokes and stories. I've just started this activity, but I feel left out because he's a really nice guy, but he doesn't joke around with me or tell me stories like he did my mom. How can I get him to be more talkative and tell me jokes like he did with my mom? My mom has known him for about 3 years, but they only talk on the phone and say hi every once in a great while. How can I start talking to him more so he will be nice to me like he is to my mom? (Also, he and my mom are both married, so it's not like he's hitting on her or anything like that, it's his personality to tell jokes and stories).
