Where to visit in Maine?

I've been wanting to take a trip to Maine for a small vacation but do not know the area at all. I live on Long Island (NY). What would be the best town area to go visit do you all think? A place with some nice sight-seeing but with some good shopping outlets and more "non trail/hiking" type of activities? Thanks
