Is it fair my parents want me to stay close to home for college and commute?

No. It's not fair. You need to spread your wings and mature as your own person and for them to want to hold you back is really selfish of them. You should go to a school you love. If it happens to be close by then fine. But going to a close school solely for that reason is not fair to you.
